Assists the surgical team during operative procedures. Arranges and inventories sterile set-up for operation, and
passes items as needed to the operating team. Assists in preparing and moving patients, and in cleaning the
operating room between cases. The Surgical tech is responsible for the provision of surgical care to meet identified
patient outcomes and to achieve the goals of the facility as directed by the registered nurse.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Communicates accurate and timely information to the Registered Nurse regarding patient in their care.
- Records pertinent information clearly, accurately, and in a timely manner.
- Maintains a proper sterile field during surgical procedures.
- Counts sponges, needles, and instruments before and after operation.
- Scrubs arms and hands and assist the surgical team to scrub and put on gloves, masks, and surgical
- clothing.
- Provides technical assistance to surgeons, surgical nurses, or anesthesiologists.
- Prepares patients for surgery, including positioning patients on the operating table and covering them with
- sterile surgical drapes to prevent exposure.
- Hands instruments and supplies to surgeons and surgeons' assistants, hold retractors and cut sutures, and
- perform other tasks as directed by surgeon during operation.
- Prepares, cares for, and disposes of tissue specimens taken for laboratory analysis.
- Washes and sterilizes equipment, using germicides and sterilizers.
- Monitors and continually assesses operating room conditions, including patient and surgical team needs.
- Operates, assembles, adjusts, or monitors sterilizers, lights, suction machines, or diagnostic equipment to
- ensure proper operation.
- Prepares dressings or bandages and apply or assist with their application following surgery.
- Cleans and restocks operating room, gathering, and placing equipment and supplies and arranging
- instruments according to instructions, such as a preference card.
- Orders surgical supplies.
- Maintains supply of fluids, such as plasma, saline, blood, or glucose, for use during operations.
- Observes patients' vital signs to assess physical condition.
- Maintains files and records of surgical procedures.
- Completes annual mandatory training by due date as assigned.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Completion of a recognized Surgical Tech program preferred (CST required in select states).
- BLS certification required.
- At least one year of experience in a health care setting.
